Generator as Other Structure

July 27, 2015

We recently had a storm where an insured is claiming his commercial grade generator which is outside of his home was damaged (apparently mechanical as leaked fuel and coolant). We are having issue with that this is not a coverage B “Other Structure”. This unit is bolted outside to a concrete/brick slab not attached to the dwelling. It is underneath an overhang wooden tin roof that just provides top cover only. This is not a “contents” type of portable generator that one would put back in the garage when use is done.

Question: This is not normal contents and we do not see it as an “other structure” and feel this unit should have been scheduled due its commercial grade and value. We seek your thoughts and opinion on this matter.

Other structures is a very broad category, with the only requirement that it is set apart by a clear space, and can be connected to the dwelling by utility lines or fences etc. As long as the generator was being used to run the home and not some sort of business, it is an other structure and should be covered as such. It's not being used for business, and other structures can be anything from rock gardens and gazebos to swimming pools and generators.
