Ride-Sharing Insurance Regulations

As ride-sharing has caught on in popularity, it has come to the attention of legislators that drivers for companies such as Uber and Lyft have gaps in insurance coverage and often are unaware of it. This leaves the drivers and others exposed to significant financial issues in event of an accident. Most ride-sharing companies provide insurance while the driver has a passenger in the vehicle, but when the driver first turns on the application to look for a passenger, there is a gap in coverage. While some states have passed legislation requiring coverage during this gap period, many are still considering it. The following chart shows what states are requiring for ride-sharing companies.
