Lloyd's has produced a new report on autonomous and unmanned vehicles that is entitled, “Autonomous Vehicles, Handing Over Control: Opportunities and Risks for Insurance.”

The report looks at two major categories of autonomous and unmanned vehicles: autonomous cars and unmanned aerial systems. It examines the role of insurance in the development and adoption of this new technology and highlights the opportunities and risks autonomous cars and unmanned aerial systems offer to insurance.

Highlights include:

- Existing autonomous and unmanned technology is already sophisticated and will continue to develop incrementally.

- Widespread adoption of the technology will rely on well-defined legal and regulatory frameworks and broad public trust on issues of safety and security.

- The question of where liability rests in the event of an accident caused by an autonomous vehicle will be important to insurers.

- Insurers will have a significant role in assisting the development of sound risk management practices for autonomous and unmanned vehicles.
