XL Group has strengthened its marine team by appointing Jonathan Eaton as chief underwriting officer for global cargo and Neil Cole as global marine business manager.

Commenting on the appointments Lee Meyrick, chief underwriting officer of global marine and offshore energy, said, “These appointments signify our ambition and commitment to drive the growth of our marine business globally including in a number of emerging markets, specifically Asia Pacific and Latin America.

“Both Jonathan and Neil have the credentials, experience, and technical skills to help us take our marine business forward.”

Mr. Eaton joins XL Group from Aviva, where he was head of specialty lines responsible for the marine, construction power, and engineering for its legal indemnity, surety, and accidental and health business written from the United Kingdom.

Mr. Eaton joined Aviva in 2012 and, prior to promotion, was head of marine.

Between 2009 and 2012, he held the position of head of global cargo at AIG, with responsibility for leading the company's worldwide cargo portfolio.

Mr. Cole joins XL Group from Zurich, where he held the position of general insurance underwriting manager for marine. His appointment at XL Group marks a return to the business; between 2003 and 2007 he worked as a senior claims adjuster specializing in marine claims for the group.

In 2007, he joined Starr Companies as international claims and production operations manager for marine; this role involved setting up claims facilities in the U.K., Europe, and Asia.

Both Mr. Eaton and Mr. Cole are based in London and report to Mr. Meyrick.

Earlier this year, XL Group appointed Mauricio Giuntini as head of marine for Brazil, to lead the company's Brazilian marine insurance business, reporting to Mr. Meyrick.

Commenting, Mr. Meyrick said, “Mauricio combines a broad experience in roles which include underwriting for both insurance and reinsurance, brokerage, as well as sales and marketing, with an in-depth knowledge of the Latin American insurance market. We expect him to develop and launch new products and to drive expansion in our business, growing his team as necessary to serve the important Brazilian market.”
