USA Business Insurance has launched two new customized business insurance packages: general and professional liability policies tailored for optometrists. The company said that these policies cover optometrists in critical areas of their practice including bodily injury, property damage, premises/completed operations, and errors and omissions.

In a statement, the company said that under general liability, the eye specialist would be covered for “any legal defense,” including attorney's fees, court costs, any court ordered judgments as well as reimbursement for time spent defending the case.

Under professional liability, the policy provides a legal defense for “any covered errors or omissions claims.” For example, USA Business said, if a patient sues because he or she was not informed about a new type of eye protection that could help the patient, the policy “will cover any resulting costs and damages.”

“Practicing optometrists, because of their considerable abilities, bear many inherent risks. The idea of our new programs is to eliminate, as much as possible, any gaps in their insurance coverage. The optometrist is protected by state-of-the-art general and professional liability insurance tailored for their special skill set,” said a spokesperson at the Burbank, California-based USA Business Insurance. “If not covered against all conceivable risks, the optometrist could lose their practice and/or other assets, an outcome no one wants.”
