Property in Transit Coverage under Commercial Property Form

December 2, 2013

Under the Property In Transit – Additional Coverage Extension in the Causes of Loss Special Form, CP 10 30 10 12, the insurance applies to your personal property in transit more than 100 feet from the described premises.

A question has come up whether the personal property shipment must have originated from or be destined for the described premises. In today's “just in time” world, many such shipments go straight from the supplier to the customer and do not originate from or are not destined for the described premises.

The coverage extension states that the insured's personal property must be on a motor vehicle the insured owns, leases, or operates while between points in the coverage territory. So, if the property meets the criteria of being the insured's property on a vehicle the insured owns, leases, or operates and is between points in the coverage territory, the policy does not specify whether one of those points must be the described premises—that is not a requirement for the coverage to apply.
