A motor vehicle is stolen in the United States every 44 seconds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Agency trend data shows that July and August are the worst months for vehicle thefts.
According to the NHTSA, over 40 percent of motor vehicle theft incidents involve mistakes by drivers; thus, the NHTSA suggests that drivers take their key, close and lock all windows and doors when the car is parked, park in well-lit areas, and never leave valuables in a vehicle, especially where they can be seen.
The NHTSA said that only 52 percent of stolen vehicles are recovered.
