PIAA, the international insurance industry trade association representing medical professional liability (“MPL”) insurance entities that formerly was known as Physician Insurers Association of America, re-elected two directors, re-appointed its slate of officers, and elected two new directors during the 2013 PIAA Medical Liability Conference in Palm Desert, California.
Ted J. Clarke, M.D., chairman and chief executive officer of the COPIC Companies, was re-elected to the PIAA board of directors and was renamed by PIAA's board to serve as chair.
“I am excited to continue to assist PIAA in its efforts to promote, protect, educate, and connect the diverse kinds of MPL entities that all support the quality delivery of health care and practice of medicine,” said Dr. Clarke.
“Today, in addition to insuring more than two-thirds of America's private practicing physicians, PIAA members insure more than 3,000 hospitals, as well as other health care providers. PIAA, through its diverse membership base, offers a unique opportunity to share patient safety information and partner to improve outcomes in the various communities MPL providers serve.”
“Dr. Clarke brings a wealth of experience, including his knowledge of patient safety, risk mitigation, and health care delivery issues, as well as the unique insights that come from running a successful medical liability insurance company,” said PIAA President Brian K. Atchinson. “We look forward to his continued leadership in the months ahead.”
The PIAA board of directors re-appointed Gloria H. Everett, president and chief executive officer of The Mutual RRG, to serve as vice chair. Paul C. McNabb, II, M.D., chairman of State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company, was re-elected to the board of directors and was re-appointed to serve as secretary.
The PIAA membership elected two new directors: Mary-Lou Misrahy, president and chief executive officer of Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company, and Joseph S. Wilson, Jr., M.D., chairman of the board and chief executive officer of MAG Mutual Insurance Company.
Completing their terms on the board are Victor T. Adamo, J.D., president and chief operating officer of ProAssurance Corporation, and William Medd, M.D., chair of Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine.
