The Physician Insurers Association of America (“PIAA”) will honor James F. Carland, III, M.D., as the 2013 Peter Sweetland Award of Excellence recipient on Thursday, May 16, at the 2013 Medical Liability Conference in Palm Desert, California. Dr. Carland is being recognized for his significant contributions and dedication to the medical professional liability (“MPL”) insurance industry and the PIAA.
Dr. Carland, an insurance executive and physician, is president and chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona (“MICA”).
His service to the PIAA includes serving as both a member and chair of the board of directors and on the PIAA's continuing education advisory committee, government relations committee, membership and bylaws committee, nominating committee, and rating agency relations committee.
Prior to joining MICA in 1997, Dr. Carland practiced pediatrics in Arizona. During his years in practice, he established a pediatric group comprised of six pediatricians and three nurse practitioners, and was chairman of the founding boards of an IPA, a statewide PPO, and an HMO. He has served on the board of a major hospital system, advisory committees for the Arizona Department of Health, the Arizona Foundation for Medical Care, and the liaison committee between the Maricopa County Bar Association and Arizona Medical Association.
“Jim has been an outspoken advocate on behalf of the medical profession and a tireless supporter of the PIAA,” said Ted J. Clarke, M.D., chair of the PIAA. “We are honored to present him with this award in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the association and the industry.”

Jim truly embodies the spirit of this award, and we thank him for his hard work and years of service.”
The Peter Sweetland Award of Excellence, established in 1993 by the Association's Board of Directors, was created in honor of Peter Sweetland, one of the PIAA's chief architects and ardent supporters.
