Laptop Exposed to Steam
February 11, 2013
We received a homeowners contents claim when an insured kept his laptop in a bathroom nook. The claim was for water/steam damage to the laptop. The insured leaves the laptop in the bathroom, and the exhaust fan recently broke, so there was excessive steam that damaged the laptop. The insured has a HO 00 03 10 00. Is the laptop covered?

Computers are personal property, and personal property is covered under named perils. Normal steam in a bathroom is not a named peril; this was not an accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam. This was a laptop kept in a bad place. There is no coverage.
