Exploding Glass
February 2, 2011
I have a claim with an HO 00 03 (4-91). The claim involves a tempered glass wall in a shower spontaneously exploding. The insured states they were in the kitchen when it happened. I believe this will fall under either an inherent vice/latent defect in the glass or faulty workmanship when the glass was installed. In either case, I believe the loss of the glass is not covered. Is this correct and would any ensuing damage to the tub, tiles and vanity be covered?

Since the glass spontaneously exploded, it would be considered an inherent defect in the glass. The damage to the door itself isn't covered, however damage to other items in the room is; that's ensuing damage and coverage is provided unless it's excluded elsewhere, and there's no exclusion for exploding glass.
