Mechanical Damage Caused by Water Leakage

Our insured's personal auto developed a water leak around the windshield seal. This leak then caused mechanical damage to the vehicle. We will not cover the damaged seal, but we are wondering about the mechanical damage. Does the mechanical damage exclusion prevent coverage in this instance or are the damages covered because the cause is leaking water?

The mechanical damage is covered if the insured has other than collision coverage under his auto policy. The mechanical failure exclusion would apply only if the loss or damage is due and confined to the mechanical damage. In this case, however, the damage is not due to and is not caused by mechanical failure; the mechanical damage itself is caused by leaking water. So, the exclusion is not applicable.
