Trophy Animals
July 19, 2010
I have a client that has several mounted trophy animals. The trophies were damaged in a fire. The question of valuation of loss has come up. How would the amount of claim be determined on this type of property?

The trophies probably have more sentimental value than actual cash value. An appraiser that specializes in such objects is your best bet for a fair valuation, since this is not something available in the general market. Being personal property, they're going to be valued at actual cash value unless there's a replacement cost option as with the HO 15, but it's not reasonable to expect the carrier to pay for the insured's trips to go hunting until he can catch another same sized animal. The following associations may be able to point you in the direction of a qualified appraiser.
