Our insured's refrigerator was recently damaged in an unusual way. He came home from a hunting trip, put what he though was an unloaded rifle on the kitchen table, and the rifle went off and damaged his refrigerator. Is this covered under the peril of "explosion"?

Nebraska Subscriber

Yes, there is coverage for this event under the peril of "explosion" (an undefined and unlimited term in homeowners policies) because of the combustion of gun powder. The explosion caused an object (the bullet) to be hurled into the refrigerator. This is no different from a case where a gas oven explodes and causes appliances in the kitchen to be damaged by the debris.
