What's ahead for insurance: A conversation with Aspen CEO Bruce Eisler
Following a year of major changes, insurance carriers are adjusting their focus to adapt to some new realities.
The last 15 months have required patience and ingenuity from everyone in the insurance industry. Change and flexibility were key hallmarks, from identifying and insuring new risks to implementing new technology to better serve policyholders; the focus remained squarely on ensuring that customers had the coverage and services they needed.
The latest edition of the Insurance Speak podcast features a conversation with Bruce Eisler, chief executive officer U.S. and chief underwriting officer for Aspen Insurance, to discuss what he sees in the industry and how his company is positioning itself to meet today’s needs while preparing itself for future growth. Aspen provides reinsurance and insurance coverage to clients around the globe.
Previously, Eisler held positions with Reliance National, ACE USA and Liberty International Underwriters. While he rose to the position of CEO during the pandemic, Eisler had already spent 10 years with Aspen, which gave him the benefit of understanding the company, its culture and goals, valuable information as they transitioned to a remote environment. “Clearly, 2020 was a stressful year, and operating remotely made it more challenging,” shares Eisler. “However, there was a real sense of collaboration and everyone wanting to get it right.”
Eisler said the company had more of an internal focus for the first 12 months of his tenure, as they concentrated on serving clients and brokers during the pandemic. “The next 12 months will be more externally focused,” he explains. “Companies can be a bit siloed, and the focus is to bring those walls down.” The company will also be prioritizing its diversity and inclusion efforts, and Eisler believes that accountability in these areas is important for every company’s success.
