Severe storms that affected more than a dozen states earlier this month caused an estimated $50 million in insured losses in Georgia.

“That figure may rise when all claims are settled,” says state Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, in a statement. “My staff will continue to make every effort to work with consumers and help them through this difficult time.”

The storm system June 13 produced the year's first derecho—a strong storm of straight-line winds with gusts of 58 mph or more.

The Weather Channel reports power was briefly knocked out at its headquarters in Atlanta.

As a line of thunderstorms moved through north and central Georgia, an EF1 tornado touched down in Cherokee County in metropolitan Atlanta. Later on June 14 another EF1 twister was confirmed in the same county and moved to Cobb and Fulton counties, says The Weather Channel.

The same weather system affected Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, New York and New Jersey.

Flooding, downed trees and power outages were widespread. Four deaths were reported.
